Scalextric SPORT Digital Slot Race Track

The competition slot track idea of the digital track system is to accurately simulate real racing by allowing two to six cars to be raced simultaneously on a two lane track, incorporating realistic passing maneuvers, by the way of lane changing.  With the push of a button (located on the hand controller) the driver can switch lanes in a certain area of the track layout.  This will also allow up to six drivers to compete in 1/3 the space of a six lane track layout.  Cool!!!

Scalextric SPORT Digital Slot Race System

The Scalextric Sport system at this point seems to be the most versatile and cross compatible of the digital systems as standard (non-digital) cars from Scalextric as well as the other companies can be converted to work in their digital system.  Their digital cars will also work on non-digital track layouts (from any company).  The Scalextric digital system is based on their newer Sport track and the digital and standard sport track pieces are fully compatible.  The Scalextric system is designed to allow up to six cars to race simultaneously.  Scalextric offers a converter set so owners of existing track can buy everything for a conversion to go digital in one box.  Read more at www.scalextricsportdigital.com.

Breaking news:

• Power Supply Transformers.
  One transformer is supplied with the SCALEXTRIC SPORT DIGITAL power base.  This will supply sufficient power to drive three (3) cars.  A second power supply (C7004), together with the first power supply, can be connected to socket P2 to supply enough power to drive four to six (4-6) cars.
• The Digital Controllers.
  The controller has two buttons and a trigger.  The trigger increases power to the car, the large oval button is a brake and the small round button is the lane change activator.  These controllers should only be used with the Sport Digital and Sport World Scalextric products.  The hand controller can be set up so that braking can be activated by use of the brake button, the trigger or both.  Braking can also be turned off (the default setting).

IMPORTANT
You must not place any standard power bases, Pacer or Challenger systems in a circuit that contains the Sport Digital power base.  Even if the non-Sport Digital power bases have no power, they may still damage your Sport Digital system.

The message I want to put across is that Sport Digital is not just about changing lanes - it is a great deal more than that!  Scalextric now moves in to a new dimension of game play.  The digital control box, seven games modes, numerous race management features and strategy give the player(s) a "Race for Real" experience.

Let's have a look at the Race Modes:

Sport Digital has seven race modes. Race information is displayed on each of the two rows of the LCD display.  All modes except Rally and Qualifying can have up to 6 cars on the track.

1/ Grand Prix
A standard format that most will recognize.  Laps left in the race and your current race position are displayed each time your car crosses the Finish Line.

2/ Endurance
Displays time left in the race (displayed in HH:MM:SS format) and flashes race position when car goes past.

3/ Rally
Allows one car per session to set a race time over a user defined number of laps.  Display shows time down to a millisecond.

4/ Pursuit
An excellent game where you simply have to lap your opponent(s).  Can last a few laps or go on for hours!  Display shows race leader and the time gap between you and leader.  An addictive game mode!

5/ NASCAR
Similar to Grand Prix but has more relevance when used with the PC software to be released later.

6/ Arcade
So compelling that you'll spend hours competing against your own best scores or against your friends.  The game idea is to complete a lap before the user set time runs out!  Each subsequent lap has a shorter time in which to complete the lap!  The display shows the time left to complete check point (lap), and finally (when time runs out) the number of lap you managed to amass before power is automatically cut to your car to indicate that time has run out.  Guaranteed to keep you busy for hours and hours!

7/ Qualify.
An easy way to prepare your race grid.  This mode allows you to set a number of laps and then to set your lap times.  The display shows your Best lap and Last lap.

Race parameters that can be changed are:
Laps -1 to 65000
Time - 1 to 65000 (hours, minutes or seconds)
Jump Start Penalty - 1 to 60 seconds.
Race end mode: All cars complete set laps OR first car to complete ends the race as remaining cars pass the Finish Line.
Power Cut mode: Live start/finish , Dead start/finish, Live start with Dead finish.
False Start - On or Off
Hand Controllers can be individually set to have braking set on or off.

As you can see, there are many variables to choose from.  The game play is realized when, for instance, Pursuit game mode you use tactics to stop the leader lapping you by trying to counter their attempts to change lanes.  In this mode all six cars can play at the same time of course - imagine the tactics now and even more so if you have three 2-car teams!

At the very least the Sport Digital module is a great race management system in itself.  The infrared sensors work well giving correct car ID detection and accurate lap counting and timing down to one thousand of a second.  Throw the added bonus of being able to change lanes and have up to 6 cars on the race track really takes Scalextric on a quantum leap.
